POM | Polyoxymethylene, Acetal or Polyacetal

POM (Polyoxymethylene, Acetal or Polyacetal) is supplied in two basic forms: homo and co-polymers. Co-polymers are thermally more stable. Non-reinforced homopolymers (POM-H) are the most rigid and resistant thermoplastics, and have excellent dimensional stability. The become fragile at temperatures below -40ºC.

They have a high degree of superficial hardness and a low friction co-efficient, giving them good slipping and wear-resistance behaviour, making them ideal for use in gearboxes.

Permeability to gases and vapours and organic substances is low. Whether homopolymers or co-polymers, they are attacked by strong acids (pH 4) and oxidizing agents, neither are soluble and they rarely swell in all kinds of organic solvents in use. They resist oils and are resistant to aggressive fuels such as diesel and petrol up to a temperature of 100ºC.

Not stabilised they are attacked by UV rays, which is why it is advisable to use them stabilised for UV or charged with carbon black.

Homopolymers have greater crystalline properties, providing better resistance to impact and making them slightly more rigid and hard, whilst the co-polymers give better comfort and ease in processing. POM provides good resistance against bending under continuous cyclic loads.
