This sustainable material is known as POM, but its official term is Polyoxymethylene, Acetal or Polyacetal. As a general rule, it is supplied in two basic forms: unreinforced homopolymers (POM-H: they are very rigid and have a high temperature resistance, as well as excellent dimensional stability) and copolymers (in reference to temperature they are much more stable than the former). They become brittle at temperatures below -40°C.
Main characteristics of POM material
Among the peculiarities of this material, its high surface hardness and low coefficient of friction stand out, giving it greater sliding capacity and good wear resistance. For this reason, it is widely used for gears.
Neither of the two ways of treating this material are soluble. At the same time, it should be noted that they hardly swell in all types of organic solvents in use.
They can withstand all types of oils and are resistant to aggressive fuels such as diesel and petrol up to a temperature of 100°C.
At the same time, it should be noted that the homopolymer has a higher crystallinity, is given a high impact resistance and is a slightly stiffer, harder material. Copolymers, on the other hand, provide greater safety and are easier to process.
Uses of this recycled plastic
Among the applications of recycled polyoxymethylene or acetal, they are mainly used in sprockets, certain connections and shafts.
