1st National Congress on Recycled Plastics

The 1st National Recycling Congress was held on 17 May, coinciding with World Recycling Day. Full capacity at the Rafiel del Pino Auditorium in Madrid and organised by Anarpla.
The main recyclers and managers were present as well as the authorities of the environmental and ecological transition of Spain and the Community of Madrid.

national plastics congressThe Spanish plastics recycling sector celebrated this day in a different way, the way it deserves. Yesterday a lot of information was given:

  • 1,133,242 tonnes of plastic waste processed.
  • 902,519 tonnes of raw material recycled in 2020
  • Estimated growth of 10% of recycled raw material in 2021 and foreseeably another 10% in 2022 due to investments.
  • Energy savings of 1,725,000 tonnes of CO2 by substitution of virgin raw material in 2020.
  • 151 companies
  • Europe’s No. 1 in recycling capacity per capita.
  • Second in PET recycling capacity, third in LDPE and fourth in HDPE and PP.

The importance of eco-design for recycling, selective collections and ensuring that the secondary raw material market, mainly made up of SMEs, is not disrupted, was also discussed. It was unanimously agreed that a material is not a problem, let alone one like plastic which is; lightweight, requires little energy to be transformed, is safe, cheap and recyclable.

But, above all, what was discussed was the need for the entire value chain to be united, the circular economy is not a one-man show, it is the result of the effort and work of the entire value chain, from the recycler who converts waste into a resource, the transformer who decides to use recycled raw materials and who wants the article he manufactures to be recyclable, the administration that promotes the circular economy, the citizens who collaborate in the collection of recyclable waste, the citizens who collaborate in the collection of recyclable waste, the public who work in the collection of recyclable waste, and the public who work to promote the circular economy, the citizens who collaborate in selective collection, the packager who decides that his packaging has to be recyclable, the machinery company that innovates to make the best equipment available for the circularity of plastics, the extended responsibility systems, collection and sorting companies, and any agent involved in their day-to-day work that makes the circular economy of plastics possible.

The extremely low raw material prices and pandemic, made recycling companies no longer profitable and now 2021-2022 with a completely different situation; high demand, investment and strong growth in recycling, and at all times this sector has shown its union and its good work, because we are aware that if we want to go far it is better to go together.

For Plásticos Alser, it has been a pleasure to have participated as speakers at a congress where the main recyclers have been brought together to share and exchange ideas on the evolution of the sector. The new technologies and future developments were highlighted, as well as the problems that exist with the new application of eco-design in the parts to be recycled in the future. A new congress is planned for next year to launch new trends and developments.
